Heads back to California this Week

Baseball Team Splits in Sacramento

Western Nevada College baseball players found their offense last weekend. After a slow start at the plate in the early going this season, the Wildcats scored 13 runs in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday against Sierra College. The decisive 13-3 victory pointed WNC in the direction it wants to go, following a 4-1 loss in the opener.

WNC traveled to the Sacramento area to play four games, but two contests scheduled against American River College and Cosumnes River College were rained out.

In game one Saturday, the teams held each other scoreless in a pitching duel until the fifth inning, when Sierra managed a single RBI. Western tallied one hit in the second inning - a double by centerfielder Jay Skilton, two hits in the seventh by Skilton and second baseman Travis Feiner, and two in the eighth by right fielder Lance Ray and shortstop Daniel Zylstra. The Wildcats' only score came in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman Eric Maupin singled, bringing home designated hitter Marshall Kennebrew.

The bats heated up in game two, as Western tallied 13 runs on 13 hits, and Sierra managed nine hits but only 3 runs. WNC led 2-1 before a monster fifth inning, when the 'cats brought home 10 runs on a combination of too many Sierra walks and great hitting. Kennebrew tripled in a run, catcher Corey Raymond and Zylstra each added a run-scoring double, and third baseman Andrew Garcia had an RBI single. Left fielder Brian Barnett went 3-for-5 with a home run and two singles, Garcia, Ray and Skilton all had two hits. Feiner and Kennebrew each had a hit.

WNC is now 3-6 and heads for Reedley, California this weekend for match-ups against Reedley College and Modesto Junior College.
