WNC Carson City event Saturday, Oct. 11

Latino Community Day Welcomes Entire Family

Campus tours, a catered lunch, raffle prizes and arts and crafts for children will all be part of Western Nevada College's Latino Community Day on Saturday, Oct. 11.

The event is free and open to the public, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Carson City campus, 2201 West College Parkway, at Sarah Winnemucca Hall in the Aspen Building. Lunch will be catered by Tacos El Chilango. A free raffle will include a grand prize of a three-credit WNC course, valued at $192.

"The event is designed to bring the Latino community to the college to learn about the process of becoming a college student," event chair Lupe Ramirez said. "They will learn that WNC offers classes for the entire family. We want them to discover the different programs available and become familiar with the college environment.

"We will offer different sessions throughout the day that will explain the process for admission, registration, financial aid and counseling," Ramirez said. "We want Latino parents to be comfortable in the college environment and learn that this is where their children need to continue their education after high school."

One of the highlights will be tours to different departments on campus such as welding, construction, business, criminal justice as well as nursing and allied health, Ramirez said. Bilingual students will assist in translating short presentations by faculty.
