Time to try out for fall theatre!

"South Pacific" auditions set for Tuesday, Aug. 12

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company invites auditions for Rodgers and Hammerstein's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, South Pacific, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, in Sarah Winnemucca Hall at the WNC Carson City campus.

The show will play at the Carson City Community Center in nine weekend performances November 8-23. South Pacific animates two love stories set in the Polynesian Islands during World War II with a powerhouse, big-Broadway score, including "There is Nothing Like a Dame," "Some Enchanted Evening," and "Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair."

The musical swept the Tony Awards when it was released in 1949, and captured seven awards this year for its current Broadway revival, which is playing to enthusiastic, sold-out audiences.

The show focuses on two couples that fall in love during the war but find their happiness threatened by the harshness of the war and by their own prejudices. Nellie, an American army nurse, falls for a French planter but rejects him when she learns that his children are half Polynesian. Although he loves her deeply, Lieutenant Cable won't marry a beautiful young woman because she is Tonkinese.

The show won a Pulitzer Prize for a script that was unusually honest for a musical in its day. Musical theatre critics in 1949 considered the discussion of prejudice offensive and called on the authors to remove the song, "You've Got to be Carefully Taught," in which Cable reviles himself for his closed-mindedness. Critics today hail the theme of the work as timeless and are quick to apply modern day parallels.

However serious the themes might become, they are deftly uplifted by comic scenes that have become musical theatre classics, including a high-spirited romp through "Honey Bun" and the sailors' comic lament, "There is Nothing Like a Dame." (more)

The production calls for multiple featured leads, a dance troupe and a chorus. Auditioners should come prepared to sing a song under one minute long. They may bring a taped accompaniment or provide the accompanist with a musical score. Callbacks will follow on Thursday evening.
