Maybe He Should Play for the "A"s! - Catcher Victor Nunez of Sparks earned straight A's in classes this spring semester at Western Nevada College.

Showing their ability in the classroom as well as on the field, the Western Nevada College baseball team has earned its third straight NJCAA Spring Academic Team of the Year Award. The team finished the spring semester with a solid "B" average (3.1 GPA), as the student athletes played more than 50 games and attended college full-time.

Catcher Victor Nunez of Sparks led the team with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. James Crockett was right behind with a 3.94, and Kyle Starratt, Josh Moody, Lance Ray, Brett Moravec and Darren Bruhns all finished above 3.6.

Coach D.J. Whittemore said it was the sixth consecutive semester that the Wildcats posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or better.

"I am very proud of these young men's effort," the coach said. "What they do in the classroom and on the field puts our college in the best possible light."

The Wildcats also had an excellent season between the base paths. The team was runner-up in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, and just missed forcing a winner-take-all tiebreaker in the post-season tournament.

Whittemore has coached the team for all three years of its existence and took the Wildcats to a conference championship and the Junior College World Series in the first two years of play.
