WNC to Graduate More Than 400

The next step in life for 426 Western Nevada College students begins May 19 and 20, as those receiving associate degrees and certificates of achievement will begin new careers or move on to other colleges.

For some, the attainment of an associate degree will be more than they imagined: perhaps as they struggled with English as a second language or the insecurity of years away from the classroom before they began college.

The Fallon commencement ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, May 19, in the Barkley Theater at Oats Park. WNC English instructor Kathy Reynolds will give the commencement address. Tuesday's ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the Carson Ctiy Community Center. The commencement address will be by Dan Klaich, executive vice chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education.

Graduates will range from teens to grandparents, and from singles to moms and dads, including the "most mature" graduate, Lois Price of Fallon, age 78. Many plan to transfer to a Nevada university to work toward a bachelor's degree. Also being honored will be a group of WNC transfer students who completed bachelor's degrees in elementary education through Nevada State College. These nine graduates took advantage of a partnership where students complete the first two years of the program at WNC, then take the final two years through NSC, online and at WNC locations.

Honorary associate degrees will be awarded to Dr. Mary Pierczynski, superintendent of the Carson City School District; Dan Holler, former Douglas County manager; and Charlie Myers, former chief executive officer of Banner Churchill Community Hospital. Each will be honored for making "significant contributions toward the quality of academic programs and academic life at WNC."
