Featuring Chilean Singer Laura Fuentes

13th Annual Multicultural Festival Promises Day of Fun

Saturday May 10, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Carson City campus
Cost: Free

Latin American duo "Calicanto" highlights a full day of free entertainment and fun at Western Nevada College's Multicultural Festival on Saturday, May 10. Calicanto's Laura Fuentes and accompanist Raquel Gonzalez Paraiso create a bridge of warmth and song between musicians from Latin America and audiences from all over the world.

Calicanto will perform twice, at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. In between there will be music from Reno's Note-Ables and the Fourth Friday Jam Group, percussion from Reno Taiko drummers, folk dancers representing Ireland, Native America, Turkey and the United States. Headlining duo Calicanto celebrates the rich diversity of Latin American music from Chile, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

More than entertainment, the 13th annual Multicultural Festival is a celebration of different cultures, and there will be food vendors, educational exhibits and children's activities.

Visitors to the campus on West College Parkway in Carson City will be directed to performances at an outdoor stage, to a food court in Rotary Plaza, and to art and cultural exhibits in the Bristlecone building.

"The festival varies every year, with a different lineup of performers," coordinator Lupe Ramirez said. "As in the past we will have various food vendors. This year we will have a wide variety, including fresh fruits, traditional Indian tacos, Mexican tacos, Salvadoran food, and fare from the Lifted Café on campus."

Ramirez said children will have a chance to enjoy arts & crafts, and face painting.

Calicanto and Fuentes are well known throughout Latin America. She has performed internationally and recorded four CDs as lead singer of Sotavento before releasing her first solo album in 1998.

Born to North American parents in Santiago, Chile, Fuentes became a political refugee in 1973 when her family fled to the United States. She earned a music degree in vocal performance at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and has performed internationally for many years. She now resides in Santiago.
