Saturday Baseball Doubleheader at Noon

WNC Rolls Over Southern Idaho Friday

Western Nevada College dominated in the first doubleheader of a four-game series against the College of Southern Idaho Friday afternoon, besting the Golden Eagles 6-2 and 11-1 at John L. Harvey Field. Western sits in second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, and CSI in fourth.

In game one, starting pitcher Kyle Starratt dodged a bullet after his first two batters reached base on a double and a Wildcats error. But Starratt and the outfield held their ground and retired three in a row to save a score. In the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Brian Barnett of Reno walked and moved forward on Lance Ray's single to centerfield and a wild pitch. With bases loaded, Barnett scored on a fly out by catcher Chuck Howard.

After retiring CSI in three in the second, Western heated up the bats as Travis Feiner and Andrew Reid hit singles. Barnett drove both home with a triple, and scored minutes later on a single by Ray to build a 4-0 lead.

Starratt held the Golden Eagles scoreless in five innings, and Western scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, one by Jerome Pena off Cliff Shepard's double deep into center field, and then Shepard scored off a single by Feiner.

CSI made a late push, scoring one in the sixth and seventh innings, and finished with seven hits to the Wildcats' six, but WNC's defense held for the win.
In the nightcap, CSI scored first after a walk, two stolen bases and a wild pitch by Josh Moody. But that would be all the scoring allowed by Moody, and the Wildcats offense took control with a two-run homer by Howard in the bottom of the first inning, along with two more runs scored on an Eagles error, for a 4-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Western's Ray blasted a home run over centerfield for a 5-1 edge, and in the sixth, the 'cats blew the game wide open with three runs on a series of Eagles errors, and a three-run double by Howard to end the game with the 10-run rule.

Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon on John L. Harvey Field at WNC Carson City, 2201 West College Parkway.
