Western Nevada College captured the first doubleheader of a four-game series against cross-state rival College of Southern Nevada Friday afternoon, besting the Coyotes 3-1 and 1-0 at John L. Harvey Field. The two teams are neck and neck in the top tier of the Scenic West Athletic Conference, with CSN currently in second place and WNC in third.

The Wildcats persevered on a blustery afternoon in the capital behind the arms of starting pitchers Kyle Starratt in game one and Josh Moody in the second, and the relief pitching of Jose Barajas, who earned the save in both contests.

In game one, defense ruled the day until the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Gutchewsky singled, and both Lance Ray and Jerome Pena doubled to give the 'cats a 2-0 lead. CSN made it 2-1 in the sixth after two base hits, a walk and a run scored on a wild pitch. The Wildcats came right back in the bottom of the inning when Gutchewsky's double brought in pinch runner Mike Long. The 3-1 score held as the Coyotes were unable to score in the top of the seventh.

In the nine-inning nightcap, the defensive struggle continued. Western managed only one base hit by Pena through the fifth inning, and Moody held the Coyotes at bay from the mound. The sixth inning was a breakout for the Wildcats, when doubles by Logan Parsley and Ray set up the only score.

Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon on John L. Harvey Field at WNC Carson City, 2201 West College Parkway.
