WNC Opens Home Baseball Season

Wildcats Set Tone With Double Victories

Home Sweet Home. Western Nevada College's baseball team opened its home season happily, winning a doubleheader over Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday afternoon. The sunny skies matched the mood as Western took the first contest 5-3, then dominated in the second 10-0, where the 10-run rule afforded an early end to the game.

Ten was the magic number for the 'cats as they also tallied 10 hits in each game. In the first contest, second baseman Davis Banks went 3 for 3, and centerfielder Logan Parsley went 2 for 3.

Winning pitcher Kyle Starratt finished 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing only three runs (two earned), five hits and two walks, with two strikeouts.

Western opened the home season strong, as Brian Barnett hit a solo home run in the first inning. The Wildcats built a 4-0 cushion with two runs in the first and two in the second before the Spartans got on the board in the third. Western answered with one run in the fourth, and CNCC made a run in the sixth with its final two scores.

In the second contest, the bats started flying early for the Wildcats, who scored four in the second inning, including a two-run triple by Chuck Howard. In the third inning, Banks again made a difference with a two-run double, and Kevin Schlange's single brought another run home.

A two-run home run over right field by Mike Long in the fourth inning built the lead to 9-0, and Logan Odom's single to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning led to the 10-0 victory. Winning pitcher was Josh Moody.

The Wildcats continue their four-game series against Colorado Northwestern Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
