Women's Soccer Team to be Deactivated

Western Nevada College has reluctantly made the decision to deactivate its successful intercollegiate women's soccer team due to a lack of conference teams in the sport. Changes in the Scenic West Athletic Conference have made it impossible for Western to offer its soccer student athletes a true soccer season, as the number of teams in the conference has shrunk to only two - Western Nevada and North Idaho College. The college is committed to offering an intercollegiate women's athletics program from among the existing core SWAC sports. Softball and volleyball are under consideration.

The conference decided last week that for 2008, no women's soccer regular season games would be played on the teams' home fields, but a single weekend conference tournament will be played in Salt Lake City to decide the conference title. The result for Western Nevada would have been that most or all of the 20 games required by the National Junior College Athletic Association would need to be played on the road, increasing team travel costs and time away from the classroom to a financially unaffordable and academically unacceptable level.

Statement by Athletic Director/Dean of Student Services John Kinkella:
"In developing our intercollegiate athletics program, the college must offer comparable opportunities to our men and women student athletes. When we set out to develop our men's baseball and women's soccer teams, that's what we had in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. Both were "core" sports in the conference. In the past three years, the status of women's soccer in the SWAC has changed, and there is no longer an adequate number of teams.
"Before making a decision about which new women's program is chosen, the college will carefully consider the prospect for ongoing viability of a particular sport in the conference, and its importance in our local communities. At this time, we are evaluating the possibility for 2008-2009 of either softball or women's volleyball programs, and plan to bring a proposal to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents this spring.

"Western is extremely proud of its Wildcats Soccer Team and has made this decision with sadness. The college is committed to assisting our soccer student athletes with their college education if they choose to stay at WNC, or will help them transfer to other schools if that is their wish."
