Soccer Team to Face NIC in Playoffs Saturday

Wildcats Defeat No. 12th-Ranked Team, Lose to Navarro

The Western Nevada College soccer team (9-5-2, 0-2-2 Scenic West Athletic Conference) won a 3-2 overtime thriller against No. 12 Cisco College in Corsicana, Texas, on Saturday. The Wildcats closed out their regular season Sunday in Texas with a 2-0 loss to Navarro College. Western will move on to face North Idaho College Saturday at 11 a.m. in Coeur d'Alene in a playoff that will determine who will advance and host the National Junior College Athletic Association regionals.

Kalah Minter was Western's hero on Saturday, leading the Wildcats to victory over one of the nation's top programs. Minter knocked in the winning goal at the six-minute mark of overtime. Devan Wellington started WNC's scoring with a goal off an assist from Jordan Forman six minutes into the game. Cisco answered with two goals to take a 2-1 halftime advantage. The lead didn't last long, as Virginia Loyola received a pass from Alexia Balmaseda and scored 37 seconds into the second half. The Wildcats outshot Cisco 9-7.

"Saturday was a great game and really built up our confidence," Head Coach Hillary Arthur said. "We had to adjust with the temperature in the upper 80's, high humidity, and the time change. I still don't think we have reached our potential."

On Sunday, the Wildcats outshot their opponent 10-9 but came away without a score. "I wanted to open up our players' perspectives and play back to back games against the kind of teams we'd face in the NJCAA tournament," Arthur said. "It was a good experience but now it's time to regroup physically and mentally and get ready for North Idaho."
