Wildcats Aim to Rebound After Tough Loss

The Western Nevada College women's soccer team (4-2) opened conference play at home Saturday with a tough 1-0 loss to Salt Lake Community College at the Edmonds Sports Complex. The Wildcats have a chance to get back on track with another home game Saturday at noon against Shasta College.

Salt Lake scored the only goal of the game at the 31-minute mark of the first half. SLCC out shot Western 13-7 for the game, but the Bruins had to weather a flurry of scoring chances in the second half with the Wildcats outshooting them 5-2. Alexia Balmaseda and Jordan Forman had point blank shots thwarted by the SLCC goalkeeper at the 78 and 81 minute marks of the second half.

WNC's best scoring chance of the game came early at the 10-minute mark when Ashley Winter banged a shot off the crossbar after Salt Lake's goalkeeper had vacated the net to make a point blank save on Balmaseda. The rebound off Winter's shot by Virginia Loyola was blocked by a Salt Lake defender in a flurry of activity that lasted about four seconds.

Goalkeeper Allie Otto had 12 saves in the game for the Wildcats.

After Saturday's contest, the Wildcats will travel to Quincy to face Feather River College on Sunday at 1 p.m. and then return home for their second conference game against North Idaho College on Saturday, Sept. 29, 1 p.m.
