Bookkeepers Can Now Earn Certification at WNC

Bookkeepers can now earn certification in their profession through a new Western Nevada College course this fall. Certified Bookkeeper (ACC 290B, Call #35838, Sec. C01), a six-credit course offered in conjunction with the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, provides an opportunity for both students and employers who utilize bookkeepers. CB's are to bookkeeping what CPA's are to accounting - the top of their profession.

The course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9:45 p.m., for working professionals and students who wish to advance their bookkeeping careers. By becoming a certified bookkeeper, students can increase their earning potential, enhance their standing in the profession, and gain an edge in the most competitive job markets. The class will also be valuable to employers who wish to assure that their bookkeepers have proven skills and required knowledge.

Upon successful completion, students will earn six credits toward an associate degree in accounting or applied accounting and will be able to sit for a nationally administered exam given by the AIPB. Students who pass the six-part exam and obtain two years of bookkeeping experience earn the right to call themselves "Certified Bookkeepers."

As a prerequisite, students must successfully complete either Bookkeeping II (ACC 136B, Call #30006, Sec. C01) or Financial Accounting (ACC 201, Call #38941 or #30503, Sec. C01 or C02) with a "C" or better, or demonstrate a thorough knowledge of double-entry accounting. This class does not teach how to become a bookkeeper - enrollees must have on-the-job bookkeeping experience or know double-entry accounting to understand the material.

Fall classes start Monday, Aug. 27.
