Preece's "Simple Systems" to Appear at WNC

"Simple Systems," a collection of conceptual photographs by Nolan Preece, will be on exhibit at Western Nevada College's Main Gallery Monday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Sept. 28.

"This exhibit will investigate the overlapping areas between conceptual, minimal and fine art photography," Preece said. "It was the intention of this work to be very spontaneous and not to get caught up in perfection. Besides, the media itself requires working in total darkness, therefore a random way of working is the norm."

Preece used the photogram as a method of working because it delivers a "photo monotype," more closely aligned with painting or printmaking. He chose chromogenic print as the medium to carry the idea, thus involving color. He used the simplest of objects to maintain a minimal gesture such as paper and glass. "This is a new approach to working for me," he said. "My past work has been loaded with meaning and fairly complex. In trying to break from being oversaturated by the art I have been making, 'Simple Systems' has indeed been a release."

Preece has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography and Printmaking from Utah State University. His work has been included in more than 100 juried, invitational, and solo exhibitions throughout the United States. His art appears in 19 permanent collections, and he has been published in various books and periodicals. In addition to teaching photography at Truckee Meadows Community College, Preece also serves as director of the TMCC art galleries.

A reception for the artist will take place in the gallery on Thursday, Sept. 6, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Everyone in the community is welcome. Info: 775-445-3000.
