Learn How to Capture Nature's Beauty at WNC

Love to sketch outdoor scenes? Like to learn how? Western Nevada College offers a non-credit, community education class this summer that will teach students how to capture nature's beauty through a variety of different mediums. Field Sketching in Nature (CMSV 086C, Sec. C02, Call #20219), scheduled for three Saturdays, July 14-28, 9 a.m.-noon, is open to anyone 14 years or older.

Mediums will include watercolor, pencil, acrylic, pastels, or pen and ink. "We will explore a variety of texturing techniques that are useful in wet or dry mediums," said instructor Mariann LaMorte, a natural science illustrator whose work has been exhibited nationally at arboretums and universities. "We will learn how to sketch an intimate landscape with the use of a viewfinder the students will assemble in class."

Students will also learn how important the viewfinder is in field sketching, along with practice techniques for visual memory. "Field sketching in nature can increase your experiential knowledge whether you are a professional naturalist or just interested in basic art techniques," LaMorte said.

Cost: $60.
