Second Wildcats Pitcher Signs with the Braves

All it took was one dominating performance in the NJCAA Playoffs for TJ Wohlever to catch the eye of an Atlanta Braves scout. In a game against Central Arizona College on May 18, Wohlever struck out four of the five batters he faced with a fastball that reached 93 miles per hour. In turn, the Western Nevada Community College baseball team scored seven runs in the eighth inning to pull out an incredible 13-10 victory that propelled them to the NJCAA World Series. The Braves recognized this effort, selected Wohlever in the 32nd round of last week's draft, and signed him to a major league contract on Monday.

Wohlever committed for an undisclosed amount and Atlanta also agreed to pay for the remainder of his college education. He has reported to the Gulf Coast League Braves in Kissimmee, Fla., and has already gone through his first workout with the team. The Braves play their games at Cracker Jack Stadium at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

"TJ and I were actually going to have lunch at the ESPN Zone in Las Vegas the day he was drafted," said Terry Wohlever, TJ's father. "When I heard about the Braves taking him, there was a smoke trail to the restaurant. I am so proud of him."

With starter Cole Rohrbough, who was drafted last year and recently signed with Atlanta, that makes two Wildcats who are headed for professional baseball careers. Rohrbough reported to Virginia on Sunday to play for the Danville Braves, an advanced rookie minor league baseball team that plays in the Appalachian League.

Wohlever ended last season as the top left-handed pitcher out of the bullpen. He finished with a 2-0 record, a 2.33 earned run average, a .177 opponents' batting average, and 24 strikeouts in 18 innings.
