NJCAA World Series Top Five Team

College to Honor Baseball Team with BBQ

The Western Nevada Community College United Students Association will host a barbecue Friday, June 1, at 1 p.m., for the Wildcats baseball team in honor of their incredibly successful second season. The event is free and open to Wildcats supporters and friends. Attendees are encouraged to wear their Wildcats gear. Head coach D.J. Whittemore, the assistant coaches and many of the players will be on hand outside the Dini Student Center on the Carson City campus.

After finishing third in the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season, the Wildcats battled their way to eight straight post-season victories to earn a berth in the NJCAA World Series. There, they won two straight games, including a victory over No. 1-ranked New Mexico Junior College, the 2005 NJCAA national champions.

The Wildcats took a 31-22-2 regular season record to post-season play in Twin Falls, Idaho, where they beat Colorado Northwestern Community College twice and College of Southern Idaho, who has played in nine World Series and won in 1984. Western advanced to the Region XVIII Championship in Henderson and knocked off No. 16 Community College of Southern Nevada, the 2003 NJCAA national champs.

WNCC then took three in Scottsbluff, Neb., two from Central Arizona College and one from Western Nebraska Community College, to advance to the World Series.
