Western's Magical Second Season Ends

Wildcats Drop Final Contest to No. 1-Ranked Team

The Cinderella season finally came to a close for the Western Nevada Community College baseball team (41-24-2) as they fell 11-1 to No. 1 New Mexico Junior College Wednesday in Grand Junction, Colo. The Wildcats finished the year in the top five in the nation with a 2-2 record in the NJCAA World Series after winning eight straight post-season games to get there.

On Wednesday, NMJC got things started early, scoring three runs in the first inning off starting pitcher Josh Brink. In the second, Kyle Bondurant smacked an RBI single to make it 3-1. NMJC then scored the next eight runs to end the game in the fifth inning on the ten-run rule.

The Wildcats won their first World Series game last Saturday against Delgado Community College 2-0 behind strong pitching from Cole Rohrbough, Dan Grubbs and Stephen Sauer. Rohrbough struck out 12 in 7.1 innings, Grubbs struck out the two batters he faced, and Sauer pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

On Monday, Western defeated NMJC 8-4 behind Thomas Miller's grand slam in the third inning. Starter Justin Garcia picked up the victory after allowing four runs in 5.2 innings. Reliever Dan Grubbs entered the game in the sixth and quieted NMJC's bats with 3.1 scoreless innings to earn the save.

After finishing with a 31-22-2 regular season record, the Wildcats traveled to Twin Falls, Idaho, where they beat Colorado Northwestern Community College 3-0, defeated the College of Southern Idaho 5-0 and knocked off CNCC again 6-0. They advanced to Henderson where they won two 6-4 games against the Community College of Southern Nevada to capture the Region XVIII Championship.

WNCC then went to Scottsbluff, Neb., where they won three over Central Arizona College 5-4, Western Nebraska Community College 11-8, and CAC again 13-10 to advance to the World Series.
