Western's 10-Game Winning Streak Snapped

Wildcats Face Rematch with Nation's Top-Ranked Team

Western Nevada Community College's baseball team (41-23-2) lost their first game of the post season Tuesday 12-5 to San Jacinto College of Houston. The Wildcats will now try to keep their NJCAA World Series dreams alive in a rematch against No. 1-ranked New Mexico Junior College today at 2 p.m. PST in Grand Junction, Colo. If the Wildcats win, they will play again on Thursday for a chance to advance to Saturday's championship. If Western loses, their incredible season will be over.

"That's the best team I have ever coached against," said Head Coach D.J. Whittemore about San Jacinto. "I have to give their hitters a lot of credit. Their 12 extra base hits are more than we've given up in an entire weekend."

The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Taylor Mieras and an RBI double from Chad Walling. SJC scored two runs in the third to regain the lead, but Andrew Reid tied things up with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning. SJC then scored the next nine runs of the game. In the ninth, the Wildcats managed two runs on Andrew Ferguson's RBI groundout and Cliff Shepard's RBI single. Reid had three hits for Western, and Shepard and Chuck Howard added two each.

Starting pitcher Stephen Sauer was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs in four innings. TJ Wohlever relieved Sauer at the start of the fifth and gave up two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. Relievers Jake Bottari and Josh Creveling each allowed two runs.

The Wildcats defeated NMJC on Monday 8-4 behind Thomas Miller's grand slam in the third inning. For streaming audio of today's rematch in real time, visit

"We've got our hands full today because these guys can really swing the bat," added Whittemore. "We have to pitch well and play good defense. And of course, the name of the game is to outscore them."

The second-year Wildcats are now 10-1 in the post-season. For more information on the NJCAA World Series, visit
