Eight Straight Wins in Post-Season

Western Wildcats Advance to World Series

A magical baseball post-season has led to the promised land for the Western Wildcats. Western Nevada Community College's two-year-old baseball team (39-22-2, 30-15 in conference) is headed for the National Junior College World Series after taking three straight victories in the Western District Regional Championship.

The Wildcats scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday to defeat Central Arizona College 13-10 in Scottsbluff, Neb., and seal the berth. They now begin World Series play Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Wildcats will play at 7:30 p.m. against Delgado Community College from New Orleans, La., the winner of the South Central District Regional, in the double elimination, ten-team World Series tournament.

Western opened Friday's game by scoring the first six runs of the game in the first three innings. Andrew Reid started with a three-run homer in the first, and then added an RBI single in the second. Thomas Miller singled in another run in the second, and Taylor Mieras chipped in an RBI single in the third.

However, CAC came back to score the next ten runs. In the eighth, the Wildcats tied up the game with an RBI sacrifice fly from Miller, an RBI double from Logan Parsley, and two runs on two wild pitches. Chuck Howard then blasted a three-run homer to give WNCC a three-run cushion.

Kyle Bondurant had four hits to lead the attack, and Cliff Shepard, Miller, Reid, Parsley and Mieras chipped in two apiece. TJ Wohlever (2-0) struck out four of the five batters he faced and Stephen Sauer pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

On Thursday, the Wildcats opened up the regionals by beating Central Arizona College 5-4 and Western Nebraska Community College 11-8.

In the eighth inning of Thursday's first game, Shepard smacked an RBI triple to tie the game and Miller put WNCC ahead with an RBI sacrifice fly. Sauer then came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory.

Central Arizona scored the first two runs of the game off starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough, but Bondurant narrowed their lead to one with a solo home run in the third. CAC scored again in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1. Reid then cut their lead to one run with an RBI single, but CAC scored another to make it 4-2. Mieras answered with an RBI sacrifice fly to make the two-run rally possible.

Reid had three hits, Bondurant two, and Shepard, Pat Grennan and Brad Carlsen added one each. Relief pitcher Dan Grubbs picked up the victory.

In the second game Thursday, Western Nebraska grabbed an early 2-1 lead. The Wildcats answered with the next 10 runs to take an 11-2 lead. In the third, Carlsen started the streak with a two-run double and then Shepard hammered a two-run homer. In the fifth, Grennan had an RBI double, Andrew Ferguson added an RBI single, and Parsley crushed a two-run homer.

Starting pitcher Justin Garcia only allowed three hits in the contest. Grubbs relieved Jeremy Joustra and earned the save, as the Wildcats held off a six-run Western Nebraska rally. Reid and Bondurant led WNCC with three hits apiece, and Grennan and Carlsen had two each.

The Wildcats have been a perfect 8-0 in the post-season against some of the top baseball programs in the country. WNCC won the Scenic West Athletic Conference Region XVIII Championship with two 6-4 victories against No. 16-ranked Community College of Southern Nevada.
