Wildcats Heading for Playoffs After Road Split

Western Nevada Community College's Wildcats baseball team is heading into postseason play, wrapping up their Scenic West Athletic Conference season in third place with a 25-15 conference record (31-22-2 overall). The Wildcats head to Twin Falls, Idaho, Thursday to meet Colorado Northwestern Community College in the SWAC playoffs.

Western ended the regular season last weekend by splitting doubleheaders at the College of Eastern Utah. The Wildcats lost Friday's first game 6-2, scoring one run in the third inning on Cliff Shepard's RBI fielder's choice and one in the seventh on Kyle Bondurant's RBI single. Chuck Howard had two hits, and Taylor Mieras, Pat Grennan and Brad Carlsen added one each.

Starter Justin Garcia (7-5) pitched four scoreless innings to start the game, but allowed one run in the fifth and four in the sixth. Jeremy Joustra came on to relieve Garcia and gave up one run, while TJ Wohlever got the last out of the game.

WNCC came back strong to win the second game 8-3, scoring in nearly every inning. Andrew Reid went three for three with four RBI to led the attack. Bondurant added three hits and one RBI, and Brad Carlsen had a hit and an RBI. Shepard, Thomas Miller, Howard and Anthony Garcia chipped in one hit apiece.

Starter Cole Rohrbough (8-3) pitched allowed only one run on three hits in four innings. The SWAC strikeout leader struck out six. Reliever Wes Osmer pitched a scoreless fifth, and Chris Rickey came through with a scoreless sixth. Josh Brink started the seventh and allowed two runs before Wohlever came in to finish the game.

Western took Saturday's opener 3-2. In the third inning, WNCC got an RBI sacrifice fly from Carlsen and an RBI single from Reid to take a 2-0 lead. Pat Grennan added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth. Howard, Andrew Ferguson, Bondurant, and Shepard chipped in one hit each.

Starting pitcher Stephen Sauer pitched only one inning because of shoulder tightness. Josh Creveling relieved Sauer, who is expected to be all right, and gave up two runs in 2.1 innings. Dan Grubbs (1-1) finished the game and picked up the victory pitching 3.2 scoreless innings.

WNCC lost the last game of the weekend 8-3. Starter Jake Bottari allowed four runs, one earned, in three innings, and Joustra and Reid each gave up two in relief.

Western scored one run in the fifth on Miller's RBI double and two in the sixth on an error by the left fielder that scored Carlsen and a bases-loaded walk to Garcia. Ferguson led Western with two hits, and Shepard, Carlsen, Reid, and Mieras added one hit each.
