Soccer Team Achieves Academic Recognition Again

The National Junior College Athletic Association recently recognized Western Nevada Community College's women's soccer team as one of their fall 2006 academic teams of the year. The Wildcats were tied for fifth place in the United States in team grade point average.

"This is a major honor for our college and our community, and a testament to the strong emphasis that we place on the welfare and academic success of our students," said WNCC Dean of Student Services John Kinkella. "I would like to commend Coach Hillary Arthur for setting and maintaining such high standards."

Teams are selected for NJCAA Academic All-American honors during the season in which they participate. So far, WNCC's teams are three for three in this honor. The soccer team was honored in fall 2005, the baseball team in spring 2006, and the soccer team again last fall.

Western's soccer team capped their second season off with a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory over North Idaho College in Coeur D'Alene to capture the Scenic West Athletic Conference Region XVIII Championship. With the win, the Wildcats advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association playoffs, where they lost 1-0 to the No. 4-ranked team in the nation. Coach Hillary Arthur was also named the Region 18 coach of the year.
