Western Takes Three of Four from CNCC

The Western Nevada Community College baseball team (16-13-1) improved their conference record to 10-6 with three convincing victories over Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday and Saturday in Rangley, Colo. The Wildcats have now won nine of their last last 12 games, and are currently in third place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

WNCC won Friday's first contest 11-0. Starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough held CNCC to one hit in four innings. Rohrbough struck out five and retired the first 11 batters he faced. Jeremy Joustra came in to pitch a hitless fifth inning, and then the game was called because of the mercy rule.

Brad Carlsen and Andrew Ferguson were the hitting stars for the Wildcats each smacking a three-run home run and going 2-4. Carlsen had five RBI in the contest, and Ferguson had four. Logan Parsley, Thomas Miller, Cliff Shepard, Chad Walling and Kyle Bondurant added hits.

In Friday's second game, a 6-0 victory, WNCC again received strong pitching. This time it was starter Justin Garcia, who gave up one hit and struck out five in six innings, and reliever Chris Rickey, who allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless seventh.

Andrew Reid, Kevin Schlange, Parsley, and Ferguson had an RBI each in the nightcap.

Western lost the first game on Saturday 4-3 because of a few mistakes, which included two errors. Starter Josh Brink only lasted 1.2 innings giving up two runs. Reliever Josh Creveling came on to pitch three innings and allow one run. Jake Bottari, Dan Grubbs and Joustra finished the game but allowed the winning run to come across the plate.

Pat Grennan was the hitting star for WNCC. He smacked an RBI single and then scored on a wild throw. Parsley, Ferguson, Schlange, Reid, Shepard and Carlsen added hits.

The Wildcats won the final game of the weekend 4-0 behind strong pitching once again. Starter Stephen Sauer struck out six and allowed only two hits in six innings. Relievers TJ Wohlever and Wes Osmer closed out the game and Osmer picked up the save.

Schlange drove in a run for Western and Chuck Howard, Kyle Bondurant, Reid, and Grennan chipped in hits.

WNCC will return home to face the College of Eastern Utah March 23-24 at John L. Harvey Field. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at noon.
