Western Improves Home Record to 8-2

Wildcats Take Three of Four Games from Salt Lake

The Western Nevada Community College baseball team (13-12-1) won both games of Saturday's doubleheader 4-1 and 4-1 against Salt Lake Community College to improve their conference record to 7-5. After winning 10-3 and losing 3-0 on Friday, the Wildcats finished strong to take three of the four games this weekend at John L. Harvey Field.

In Friday's first game, starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough (3-1) rang up 10 strikeouts in four innings and gave up two runs to pick up the win. He was relieved by Jake Bottari, who gave up one run in two innings. Reliever TJ Wohlever finished the game with one scoreless inning and two strikeouts.

Catcher Taylor Mieras and designated hitter Chuck Howard led WNCC's offensive attack. The Wildcats scored three runs in the second inning, five in the third and two in the fourth. Mieras started things off with a two-run double in the second and scored on an error by the third baseman.

Howard banged out a two-run double in the third inning and scored on an error by the catcher. Outfielder Brad Carlsen added an RBI single, and Mieras scored another unearned run on a bases-loaded walk to first baseman Thomas Miller. Howard finished the scoring off with an RBI double in the fifth.

In Friday's second game, starting pitcher Justin Garcia (2-3) took the loss allowing three runs in 6.1 innings while striking out four. Reliever Dan Grubbs came in to get the final two outs. WNCC could not manufacture any hits in the game against strong SLCC pitching.

On Saturday, WNCC won both games with strong pitching, clutch hitting and excellent defense. Both starting pitchers went the distance. "I felt real good but I have to give credit to our defense," said Josh Brink (3-2), who gave up one run in the first game. "They were getting leadoff hits every inning and our guys just kept making good diving stops and crucial double plays."

WNCC scored two runs in the second inning and two in the third. In the second, Carlsen singled, stole second and scored on outfielder Pat Grennan's RBI single. Mieras added an RBI single to round out the scoring. In the third, third baseman Logan Parsley singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on another wild pitch. Outfielder Pat Grennan drove in the fourth run on a fielder's choice.

In the second game, Stephen Sauer allowed only two hits and one run in picking up his second win of the season. "The game was pretty smooth for me, I just made one mistake," said Sauer. "No one's a pushover in this league, so our offense came up big."

Carlsen was the hitting star of the game with one swing of the bat. In the fifth, he knocked in two with a double and then scored on a throwing error that went into the dugout. Second baseman Kyle Bondurant added an RBI single in the sixth.

The Wildcats will travel to Rangley, Colo., to take on Colorado Northwestern Community College in two doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Western will return home to face the College of Eastern Utah March 23-24 at John L. Harvey Field.
