Wildcats Take Three of Four from No. 17-Ranked CSI

Baseball Team Wins Weekend Finale in Dramatic Fashion

The Western Nevada Community College Wildcats baseball team (10-11-1) won three of four games last weekend against No. 17-ranked College of Southern Idaho to even their conference record at 4-4. The Wildcats won Sunday's finale 3-2 on Chuck Howard's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"Brad Carlsen got it all started with a double to lead off the inning," said Head Coach D.J. Whittemore. "I have to give credit to our hitting coach Aaron Demosthenes who has worked real hard with Brad on his offensive game. We're just real excited to beat a good team with such a great baseball tradition."

Outfielder Andrew Ferguson got WNCC started in Sunday's nightcap with a single in the fourth that drove in two to make it 2-1. CSI tied it up in the sixth, and then Carlson scored the winning run in the seventh on Howard's double. Second baseman Kyle Bondurant had two hits in the contest and outfielder Anthony Garcia added a hit.

Starting pitcher Stephen Sauer (1-2) picked up his first win of the year pitching a complete game. He struck out five and allowed only four hits and two runs in seven innings. "We were happy to see Steve get his first win," added Whittemore. "He continues to get better every time he pitches."

In Sunday's first game, a two-run double from Garcia in the third inning was all the Wildcats needed in a 2-1 victory. Starting pitcher Josh Brink (2-2) pitched well striking out seven and allowing three hits and one run in five innings. Relief pitchers Jeremy Joustra and Dan Grubbs finished the game giving up only one hit in two scoreless innings. "Our pitching continues to keep us in ballgames," said Whittemore. "We have only given up 11 runs in eight conference games."

Starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough (2-1) was the pitching star of the weekend as he picked up the win in Saturday's first game with a strong performance. He pitched a complete game shutout, allowed only two hits and struck out 10 in a 3-0 victory.

WNCC hitters jumped out early scoring one run in the first inning when Bondurant scored on Garcia's groundout to second. The Wildcats struck again in the third on first baseman Thomas Miller's first home run of the season, a solo blast. Carlsen scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to round out the scoring.

In Saturday's second game, WNCC lost their sixth one-run game of the year 3-2. Starter Justin Garcia (2-2) picked up the loss allowing three runs in 6.1 innings. Relievers Grubbs, Chris Rickey and Joustra closed out the game.

CSI scored first in the second inning. WNCC tied it up in the fifth on third baseman Logan Parsley's RBI groundout that scored pinch runner Chad Walling. CSI then scored two runs in the seventh to make it 3-1. The Wildcats came through with one run in the bottom of the seventh when designated hitter Andrew Reid was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Howard then pinch hit and flied out to end the game.

The Wildcats will play another set of noon doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against Salt Lake Community College at John L. Harvey Field. Tickets are $6 for adults; $3 for seniors 60 and older, youth 18 and younger, and WNCC faculty and staff; and free for WNCC students, as well as children age 4 and younger.
