Western Wins One and Drops Three One-Run Games

The Western Nevada Community College Wildcats baseball team (7-10-1, 1-3 conference) outscored cross-state rival Community College of Southern Nevada six runs to five in Friday and Saturday doubleheaders in Henderson, but lost three of the four games. The Wildcats opened conference play by dropping two extra-inning games 1-0 and 1-0 on Friday, and splitting Saturday's games with a 4-0 victory and a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.

On Friday, Western's bats went cold as the Wildcats managed just four hits and no runs in the first game. Designated hitter Anthony Garcia had two singles, third baseman Logan Parsley had a double, and catcher Chuck Howard added a single.

Starting pitcher Justin Garcia allowed only two hits in seven plus scoreless innings while striking out four. Reliever Chris Rickey (1-1) picked up a tough loss on a missed force out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Reliever Dan Grubbs came on to record the final out.

In Friday's second game, starting pitcher Cole Rohrbough gave a dominating performance, striking out 13 and giving up only one hit in seven scoreless innings. Reliever Josh Creveling (1-1) earned the loss when CCSN came through with a dramatic two-out, RBI infield single in the eighth inning. Parsley's single was the only hit for the Wildcats.

In Saturday's opener, starter Josh Brink (1-2) blanked CCSN, striking out four in 5.2 innings. Reliever Dan Grubbs came on to get the Wildcats out of the sixth inning, and Jeremy Joustra finished the game with one scoreless inning.

WNCC scored all of its runs in the third and seventh innings. Second baseman Kyle Bondurant started it off by scoring on a wild pitch in the third and first baseman Thomas Miller followed with an RBI squeeze bunt. In the seventh, Parsley was hit by a pitch to force in a run with the bases loaded and Miller delivered an RBI single. Bondurant and Parsley led Western with two hits each, and Miller, Anthony Garcia, Howard, designated hitter Andrew Reid and outfielder Brad Carlsen added one hit apiece.

Then Western dropped another one-run game. Starting pitcher Stephen Sauer pitched well in the loss allowing two runs, one earned, in 4.2 innings. TJ Wohlever relieved Sauer and got the Wildcats out of the fifth inning. Jake Bottari (1-1) took the loss, giving up one run in 1.1 innings. Reliever Wes Osmer got the final out for WNCC.

Western's scoring was by Parsley's RBI single in the third inning and Reid's RBI single in the fourth. Outfielder Andrew Ferguson added two hits.

The Wildcats will return home to face the College of Southern Idaho in another set of noon doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at John L. Harvey Field. Tickets are $6 for adults; $3 for seniors 60 and older, youth 18 and younger, and WNCC faculty and staff; and free for WNCC students and children age 4 and younger.
