Baseball Team Posts Winning Scores in the Classroom

Getting A's and B's in the classroom can be just as important to a Western Nevada Community College student athlete as hitting a home run. Last fall, the WNCC men's baseball team posted a combined 3.03, out of a possible 4.0, and passed 94 percent of the classes they attempted. This marked the third semester in a row that their cumulative grade point average was above the 3.0 mark.

This accomplishment comes on the heels of the team being named one of the National Junior College Athletic Association's 2005-2006 spring academic teams of the year. "Western strongly supports the academic achievement of our student athletes," Dean of Student Services and Athletic Director John Kinkella said. "The high expectations we have set for our student athletes continue to be met. We are delighted as much by their academic progress as by their league championships."

Baseball Head Coach D.J. Whittemore continues to mandate ample study time and to stress the need for academic progress, Kinkella said. "Additionally, Counseling Services works with the coaches to carefully track the progress of the student athletes."

The fall academic stars of the baseball team included middle infielder Kevin Schlange with a perfect 4.0 GPA and relief pitcher Dan Grubbs with a 3.71. In addition, 12 of the 13 second-year players on the team are carrying a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The baseball team finished with a Scenic West Conference Championship and a Top 20 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association's final poll in their inaugural season.
