Get Creative and Paint with Oils at WNCC Yerington

Interested in taking up a new hobby or brushing up on painting skills? Western Nevada Community College is offering a spring class on how to paint with oils.

Creative Crafts (CR 136B, Call #13051, Sec. Y01) is offered on Mondays from 7-9:45 p.m. This three-credit class will introduce students to crafts, and stress design principles and expressive qualities utilizing a variety of craft materials. Cost: $169.50.

"We will use still life models in the class," said WNCC instructor June Musick. "If students have landscape photos they want to paint, however, they can bring them and we will set that up for them."

No lab fee is assessed, so students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies including brushes, mediums, a set of oil paints, and various tools.

"We will discuss these materials," Musick said. "Students should bring them to the first class, so they will be ready to paint right away."

Brushes include two flat and two round (#6 & #8), round sable (#4 & #6), one and two-inch blenders, and one fan brush (#6 or #8). Mediums are linseed oil and odorless turpentine. The set of oil paints should be tube oil (any grade). Tools include a diamond-shaped or long palette knife, a wood or plastic paint palette, a roll of foil to cover the palette, a 14-inch by 18-inch canvas, a container for cleaning brushes, several rags, a table or floor easel, and an old shirt or smock.

Spring classes begin Monday, Jan. 22.
