Soccer Team Wins Region XVIII Championship

The Western Nevada Community College women's soccer team (10-8-2) won the Scenic West Athletic Conference Region XVIII Championship in dramatic fashion Saturday with a 1-0 overtime victory over North Idaho College in Coeur D'Alene. With the win, the Wildcats will advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association playoffs this weekend.

"Winning the tournament was one of our goals we set this year in August," said Head Coach Hillary Arthur, who was named the conference's Coach of the Year. "This just shows that you need to keep pursuing your goals until you reach them."

Both teams were pursuing their first goals throughout Friday's contest. The scoreless game carried into overtime, when at the three-minute mark, Western's Hannah Lee came through with the biggest goal in the program's two-year history. Courtney Lenhart provided the assist, and goalkeeper Rachelle Goulet had an outstanding game, holding North Idaho scoreless through three periods.

Lee and Lenhart were named to the SWAC All-Region Team, along with Jessica Maule and Meghan Olsen. "I pushed them hard because I knew they could do it," said Arthur. "Winning the conference tournament is a big deal for our program. It hasn't been an easy process."

The Wildcats overcame the loss of two important players during the season. "We lost Dominique Gloude to a season-ending injury and Christina Bradshaw left the team for personal reasons," said Arthur. "That made it all the more special."

Next stop for Western is the NJCAA playoffs Friday in Overland Park, Kan., where the Wildcats will face Laramie County Community College at noon. The winner will advance to play Johnson County Community College Saturday at noon. Laramie is ranked number four in the nation and Johnson number seven.
