WNCC Announces 2006-2007 Cultural Series

An inspiring story about a Paralympic medalist and wheelchair marathoner will kick off Western Nevada Community College's free 2006-2007 Cultural Series, "Faces, Voices & Stories," on Friday, Oct. 20. Three more interesting lectures, a jazz performance, and a community festival will round out the series that is sponsored by the WNCC Office of Student Activities and United Students Association:

"Choosing Victory" with Candace Cable
Friday, Oct. 20 - Marlette Hall, 7 p.m.
This wheelchair-racing pioneer will discuss how she turned a life-threatening injury into a successful 27-year athletic career.

"Comic Relief" with Brian Crane, creator of the "Pickles" comic strip
Friday, Dec. 1 - Marlette Hall, 7 p.m.
The 2006 Cartoonist of the Year nominee will talk about his award-winning comic strip that appears in more than 500 newspapers daily, and where he drew his inspiration.

"Geologic Tales of Lake Tahoe" with WNCC professor & Geologist Winnie Kortemeier
Friday, March 30 - Marlette Hall, 7 p.m.
Kortemeier will explore ancient volcanic activity including a display of rock samples from the Tahoe Basin in this multimedia presentation.

"Exposed to the West: Black Rock & Other Stories" with Peter Goin and Paul Starrs
Thursday, April 12 - Marlette Hall, 7 p.m.
Goin and Starrs share the wonderful stories, fascinating characters, and unbelievable antics they have experienced in 40 years of traveling across Nevada.

"A Vocal Celebration of Jazz" with Ce Ce Gable
Friday, April 20 - Sarah Winnemucca Hall, 7 p.m.
One of the premier jazz singers in the region will perform a tribute to the great jazz standards with a contemporary twist, in recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month.

"Embrace Diversity, 12th Annual Multicultural Festival"
Saturday, May 12 - Carson City Campus Outdoor Plazas, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Local Nevadans will present food, music and dancing celebrating the community's culture and diversity. Youngsters will enjoy the Children's Cultural Corner.
