WNCC's Dennis Cox Serves County and Country

Dennis Cox, an industrial safety trainer for Western Nevada Community College Fallon, is currently responsible for training of another kind in a different part of the world. Since April 2005, Cox has been serving the U.S. government as a civilian trainer in Iraq.

Cox utilizes the special abilities he developed in the military and from his life experiences to train Iraqi police and other personnel in skill development. This includes the use of firearms, tactical strategies, and supervision. He is also able to assist in medical emergencies.

When Cox returns to Fallon from his tours of duty, he brings many interesting stories back to the campus. In fall 2004, as a result of an e-mail he sent out about the poverty he witnessed in the country, WNCC faculty, staff, and students donated new and used clothing, toys, stuffed animals, hard candies, and gum to Iraq. The donations were packaged into several large shipments that were sent to Cox, who distributed the items, along with other armed forces contributions, to poor children in Iraqi villages.

"Dennis should be commended for the work he does for our country," WNCC Fallon Dean Bus Scharmann said. "His expertise has also allowed the college to better meet the industrial safety needs of businesses, industries, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations in our 18,000-square-mile service area."

In fall 2003, Cox developed a curriculum that launched WNCC's industrial safety program. Cox is a certified environmental trainer, Hazardous Materials Training Institute trainer, a certified respiratory administrator, and a certified OSHA respiratory fit

Until he completes his service overseas, WNCC continues to provide industrial safety classes using other qualified trainers in northern Nevada. Instruction is either on-site at specific companies or organizations, or at one of Western's three campuses.
