Hawthorne Job Prep: Jump Start a Career at WNCC

Looking for a new career? Western Nevada Community College was recently awarded a grant to conduct non-credit occupational training in Hawthorne. Anyone 18 years or older that is interested in learning a skill to help them land a job is encouraged to sign up for the free Hawthorne Job Prep courses that begin May 12.

"This is a rare opportunity for Mineral County residents to receive free training to be ready for our new industries," said Shelley Hartmann, Mineral County Economic Development Authority executive director. "The training gives our workforce an edge few others have in readiness and ability to meet the needs of new job creators."

WNCC created Hawthorne Job Prep after reviewing the results of a community-wide survey. The MCEDA was a critical partner in the implementation of the program, which is being funded by Nevadaworks, the workforce board for 13 Nevada counties.

Upcoming classes include Mining Safety and Health Administration Training May 12-20, Residential Carpentry May 16-June 24, Microsoft Word May 23 & 25, Clerical Skills May 24-June 28, Entrepreneurship June 8-9 & 29-30, Microsoft Excel May 30 & June 1, Job Search Techniques June 6-22, Microsoft Access June 6 & 8, PowerPoint June 13 & 15, Customer Service June 16, Microsoft Publisher June 20 & 22, and Acrobat June 27 & 29.

Applicants are encouraged to apply right away because each class has a cap on how many can sign up. High school students under 18 years of age can sign up for the classes with a completed high school authorization form. Applicants are also required to commit to working in Mineral County for six months after their training.

To sign up, call WNCC Hawthorne, 775-945-2405, or Hartmann, 775-945-5896.
