Wildcats Offering Free Admission To First Home Games

Grab your baseball hat and glove, and come out to support the Western Nevada Community College baseball team this Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats will take the field for their first league contests in Carson City against Colorado Northwestern at noon and 3 p.m. both days. To celebrate this historic event, admission to Friday's games will be free for everyone.

The Wildcats will play this weekend's games at Carson High School's McNutt Field, while construction is completed on the new John L. Harvey field at the WNCC Carson City campus.

This past weekend, the Wildcats (7-9) won one of a four-game series against cross-state rival Community College of Southern Nevada in Henderson. On Friday, Feb. 17, the Wildcats took the first game 5-4 and then lost the second 2-1. On Saturday, WNCC dropped two contests to CCSN, 8-5 and 3-2.

In Friday's first game, Justin Garcia (3-1) held CCSN scoreless in three innings but gave up four runs in the fourth. Relievers Dan Grubbs and Ryan Iodence then came in to shut down CCSN. Grubbs had a crucial strikeout in the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded, while Iodence earned the save with two outs in the seventh.

The Wildcats scored all five runs in the first two innings. Tyson Jaquez had two RBI on two hits; Kyle Bondurant had one RBI on two hits and a run scored; Brad Carlsen had one RBI on one hit and a run scored; Taylor Meiras scored a run and had one hit; and Carson High grad Aaron Henry had one hit, one run and one stolen base.

In the second game, pitcher Mason Tobin lost a tough one, striking out seven and allowing only one hit and two runs in 4.2 innings. Bondurant had another good game, netting two hits and driving in one run. Jaquez and Pat Grennan had one hit each, and Jimmy Pierce scored WNCC's only run in the seventh.

In the first game Saturday, Meiras knocked in three runs on a double in the fourth, Thomas Miller hit a long solo home run in the sixth, and Bondurant continued his strong weekend with an RBI in the seventh. Starting pitcher Stephen Sauer allowed four runs in three innings, including three in the first. Chad Riddle gave up three runs in the sixth and Grubbs gave up one in the fifth.

In the second game, WNCC lost a close one as pitcher Cole Rohrbough allowed three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Wildcats scored one run in the second on a squeeze bunt by Douglas High grad Chad Walling knocking in Jaquez, and one run in the third on a single by Jaquez driving in Jerahmie Libke.

Admission prices to Saturday's conference game and future home games will be $6 for adults, $3 for seniors age 60+, $3 for youth 17 years and younger, and free for WNCC students with a current identification card. Season tickets are also available.
