WNCC, Nevada State College Formalize Partnership to Provide Academic Programs

Western Nevada Community College and Nevada State College today formalized their joint effort to provide bachelor's degree opportunities to students living in Western's seven-county, 18,000-square-mile service area. A partnership agreement has been signed by both college presidents, Dr. Fred Maryanski of Nevada State College and Dr. Carol Lucey of WNCC.

The agreement lays out a framework to develop programs for students who begin their college studies at Western and transfer after two years into a Nevada State College program. They may then complete a bachelor's degree from NSC without having to travel far from home.

Both colleges are committed to developing a formal dual admissions policy by spring 2007 which will allow students to co-enroll in WNCC and NSC. The colleges also plan collaboration to maximize financial assistance opportunities and support services for students.

"For many years, WNCC students and graduates as well as community leaders have requested access to bachelor's degree opportunities within our service area," President Lucey said. "WNCC is committed to developing this partnership to provide a seamless higher education ladder for residents of the communities we serve."

President Maryanski said, "As human capital plays a more pronounced role in today's knowledge and information-based economy, more educational opportunities must be made available to students who desire to further their education. Our partnership with Western Nevada is not only the right step, but also a large step, in making a baccalaureate education more accessible throughout Nevada."

NSC and Western have worked jointly for more than a year to provide WNCC teacher education students who completed two years of study the chance to enroll at Nevada State and work toward a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Students have attended classes at WNCC campuses and teaching centers, as well as online and via two-way interactive video. Some students will be ready to graduate in the coming academic year.

Central to the WNCC-NSC partnership is the commitment to continue developing agreements for joint academic programs, in response to demonstrated, unmet community needs.

"We'll continue to evaluate the needs of our employers, students and community to ensure that our academic programs and partnerships best meet their goals," Lucey said.
