WNCC Hosting Nevada Community Colleges Conference

Community college faculty, staff, administrators and supporters from throughout Nevada will converge at Western Nevada Community College in Carson City on Friday, April 22, for the state's annual community colleges conference.

"Promoting Quality Education in Nevada Community Colleges" brings together national and regional speakers on community college issues. It will also provide the opportunity to share strategies about common concerns. WNCC President Carol Lucey says, "The four Nevada community colleges are increasingly important to our state. All have comprehensive missions providing training to businesses and industries and serving the cultural needs of their communities, but always and most importantly, providing supportive, affordable ways for people to begin a college education, or to start an interrupted education over again. More than ever before, a college education is often the ticket out of a dead-end job, or the key to a new attitude toward life.

"For most Nevada college students, like college students across the country, this transformational life experience begins at a community college. Each year, the four Nevada colleges come together in the spring to exchange ideas about new ways of serving our students and communities. This year, Western is happy to host the conference once again."

Issues for discussion will include college libraries and their changing roles, student retention, assessment, educational issues and the legislative process, and grant opportunities with the National Science Foundation. The keynote speaker is Interim Chancellor James Rogers. There will also be an awards dinner to honor top community college alumni and faculty, and a Star Party at the Jack C. Davis Observatory.
