Tye Fitzpatrick to Coach WNCC Rodeo Team

Western Nevada Community College has named Tye Fitzpatrick as its new rodeo team coach. Fitzpatrick, a Carson High School graduate and professional rodeo competitor, begins immediately.

Fitzpatrick has competed as a team roper, calf roper and steer wrestler in high school, college and professionally. He first participated in the Reno Rodeo as a high school senior. He was on the West Hills College, Calif., rodeo team and rode as an independent competitor while attending the University of Nevada, Reno.

"I'll begin recruiting at northern Nevada high school rodeos, meeting competitors and their parents. We'll be looking for athletes throughout the college's service area," said Fitzpatrick. Bus Scharmann, dean of the WNCC Fallon campus, said, "Tye will hit the ground running. We have our annual rodeo dinner dance and auction coming up on Friday, March 18, and Tye will be working with volunteers and Outreach Coordinator Sue Richards to contact as many potential rodeo team members as possible."

WNCC's rodeo team has enjoyed success in its first two years. The team, based at the WNCC Fallon campus but open to all full-time students, has hosted two National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeos. Team roper Garrett Smith qualified for the 2004 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., finishing in the top 10. The team will participate in six NIRA West Coast Region rodeos in Nevada and California this spring.
