Kids Learn Art, Sewing and Safety at WNCC Douglas College for Kids

Children from ages 7 to 11 can take classes ranging from drawing, painting and sewing to teen safety and baby-sitting certification this fall in College for Kids classes at Western Nevada Community College Douglas.

Fun with Watercolors: children from 8 to 14 can learn how to use watercolor as a medium at Western Nevada Community College Douglas. The class (CFK 101, Sec. D05) meets Wednesdays, Dec. 1-22 from 4-5:15 p.m. Students will learn different techniques for landscapes, cartoons, pets and portraits and will paint whatever subjects interest them.

Drawing Techniques teaches skills such as shading, value and perspective. Students ages 6 to 12 learn to draw with charcoal pencils, colored pencils or pen and ink. The class (CFK 101, Sec. D02, fee $65) meets Tuesdays, Nov. 9-30, 3:45-5:15 p.m.

Sewing (CFK 125, sec. D01, fee $30) is on Saturday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m.-noon. Students from 8-12 learn beginning sewing with simple pattern reading. The class project is to make a pillow. Students must bring a sewing machine and supplies. Basic Safety for Teen Women (CFK 121, Sec. D01, fee $30) teaches safety skills, self-protection skills and dating safety issues for girls ages 13-18. Students should wear sweat pants and sneakers. The class meets Sunday, Nov. 7, 1-4 p.m. at Sierra Dojo, 1411 Hwy. 395, Gardnerville.

Baby-Sitting Certification (CFK 102, Sec. D01, fee $35) is on Saturday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The class, for ages 11 and up, covers dealing with emergencies, supervising children and entertaining children of different ages. Graduates earn a baby-sitting certificate.
