Find Your Writing Voice In WNCC Creative Writing Class

Awaken your creative genius this fall. Western Nevada Community College is offering English 205, Introduction to Creative Writing (call #38968, Sec. C01) on Mondays from 7-9:45 p.m.

The three-credit class, taught by Professor Marilee Swirczek, is not a technical course in the craft of writing fiction or poetry, but rather a class that examines the ways human beings discover insights about themselves using the language of narrative, creative nonfiction, and poetry.

Swirczek, an English faculty member since 1989 and Lead Faculty for the Division of Communication & Fine Arts, has been named twice as Outstanding Faculty by WNCC students and received the Nevada Regents' Teaching Award in 2001. Swirczek was recently named a finalist in poetry in this year's Nevada Arts Council Literary Arts Fellowship Competition.

"Students will write personal pieces, and we'll examine those to reveal the truths beneath the surface," Swirczek says. Then the real writing begins as we distance ourselves from our personal stories and move toward using language to dramatize those truths. Rather than analyzing and studying methods, we will respect and nurture the nonlinear, intuitive creative process."

Several students return year after year to the course. "I work hard to create a safe environment for writers at all levels. My assignments have been the seeds for several published works by students," Swirczek says. "And it's fun to hang out with other writers."

English 101 and 102, or permission of the instructor, are prerequisites for the course, which may be taken for credit or audit. The fee is $159. Nevada residents 62 or older may register without paying registration, application or admission fees. Register on the WNCC Web via Web-REG.
